fairytalenoir: (but now I'm alive thinking is killing me)

[ It takes him a few minutes to maneuver the cheap, wobbly card table through the door; he's thin and wobbly looking himself, all awkward-jaunty teenager angles, and maybe a bit sick, besides. Hollow eyes, pasty skin. He'd look right at home in a 19th century tuberculosis ward, though he is not in fact coughing or anything.

Once he's got the table set up, the Boy tapes his cardboard sign to the edge:

THREE CARD TAROT READING
$2 OR BARTER

At which point he seats himself on a stool behind the table, a slouching and patient figure in a blue hoodie, black peacoat, jeans, and red sneakers. A single deck lies on the table, face down, the patterned backs evincing some sign of wear. ]

I'll say so.

[She's quite the stoic. But then, is it the norm for people to get upset at tarot readings? She's only really seen them on television, or in the hands of some newbie who didn't know a damn thing about what they were doing. Whatever future fate he reads, she's likely to be half-expecting it already.]

Isannah lingers by the table, frankly more concerned about the boy than the tarot reading. She isn't willing to foist her medical concern on him so quickly, though, so instead she takes a seat in front of the little table on a stool of her own.

"Two dollars," she says, fishing the bills out of her wallet, "and a gift, if you're good at it."

With a friendly smile on the end. Later she'll write down the small deduction, since she can be obsessive about money, but it's only two dollars.

"So is tarot, sometimes," she says, though she seems to approve of the venture anyway. It's entrepreneurial. After a moment of appraising the deck, she selects her three cards. She's very deft in how she touches them, as though she doesn't want her fingertips to linger too long.

Isannah sits with her knees together and her dress smoothed out, ladylike, her hands on either side of the chair's seat. She doesn't fidget with her dangling crescent moon earrings or the old 1950s men's watch she wears, but she listens to the reading with genuine attentiveness.

The Tower won't recur in this reading, she supposes, but that doesn't mean it can't repeat itself. Le Maison Dieu, the House of God, in the French-language deck she saw when she was younger, which was pretty spot-on as a Tower approximation for a houseful of occultists. Not pleasant, no.

She doesn't think she's expected to say anything, so she doesn't, but her little smile is communicative enough. Go on.

Her gaze flickers over the card, and there is a shadow of surprise, there, if only because the words he chooses aren't ones she usually applies to herself. Mostly 'prudence', but it isn't inaccurate, come to think of it.

"And now," Izzy says, tone light, "the grand denouement."

Isn't the future what everyone wants to know? But she sort of knows hers, sketched out roughly with an awful, looming finality to it, and tarot isn't for precise measures. That doesn't mean she isn't curious to see what it'll be.

All very transitional cards, she notes. Which is also not inaccurate. Now she twists the gold bracelet around her wrist, which is very old and distinctly magical, although it has no outward effect; it's more like it's keeping something in.

"My favorite card." It really is, despite having some morbid implications associated. The high priestess is too obvious, strength too simple. "It's also called the Traitor."

That's more musing out loud than anything else; she expects he already knows that.

[ Introspection is something he has never been able to manage without struggle, so there is no visible flash of comprehension as something about the reading clicks into place; however, the last sentence does prompt a little flicker across his expression, but whatever it was, he loses it before he can interpret it.

He looks up at the Boy in earnest.]

[Kai's never been much into tarot, but hey, he'll try new things. Usually. He gives the younger boy a once-over before reaching into the short arm guard on his left forearm - objects of holding were really useful - and withdrawing a small, round glass bottle containing a bright green liquid.]

I'll give you a potion in exchange for...whatever you think you can see.

[Because hey, he looks like he needs it, but Kai'll be polite and not actually say that.]
