On a yearly basis, my coworkers get together and decide it's time to force me to take a vacation. I'm not entirely sure why it's become tradition, but every year I've failed to argue otherwise no matter how much work there is to do.

So forced vacations. Where would you go, what would you do?

I'd end up half-drunk in a pocket between dimensions and embarrass myself in front of my future boyfriend. Seems like you're the one with experience.

Ah, see, I learned that lesson in my teens. No drinking that'll involve the general public. Keeps things easy.

That I certainly believe. I must confess, though, I've spent most of my forced vacation drinking beer and watching taped sports. I think that violates my coworkers' intentions.

As far as I'm concerned, if they're not around, it's none of their damn business.

They mean well. I wouldn't be the good cop, so to speak, if I didn't concede to those meaning well some of the time.

Back to college, to finish my degree. [ Yes, he's perfectly well aware that that's defeating the purpose of vacation. ]

A few cases of beer and the entire season of whatever football team's winning this year. Not exciting, I know.

It's your vacation; you're entitled to do whatever you want. Perhaps even more so if you had to be forced to take a vacation in the first place.

Fair point. I'm afraid I'm pretty lacking in more creative ideas.

Do you want something more creative? You could always fall back on an old standby-- a cruise, camping, tropical islands-- though, to be fair, those are arguably no more creative than beer and football.

They'd be a change of pace, but they're either out of my league or impractical. I'm from the city. I'm pretty sure I'd somehow be slaughtered and devoured alive by squirrels if I attempt to go camping.

You're putting an awful lot of faith in squirrels' ability to kill you. But if you're interested, there's quite a variety of things you can do in a city, as well.

Correction: I'm being realistic about my inability to handle nature and all it's natural glory.

All its natural glory is rather alarming. I suppose if your forced vacation's meant to be relaxing, old standbys may be best.

Well, it's not exactly fair for them to dictate what you do with your time; that'd be like work all over again.

What is it you do?

The easiest way to describe it is consultation work. We assist various authorities as well we independent groups with community problems, specialized crimes, and organization.

Sounds like quite the exciting job.

It has its ups and downs.

More ups than downs, I would hope, if you're still doing it.

It's still worth it, yeah. I'm a bit young to get jaded yet.

Oh, you're never too young to be jaded-- but you might be too young for people to take your jadedness seriously.

There's an age that comes from knowledge rather than time, I feel.

Well, it can be a bit easier convincing people of your maturity-- and your right to be jaded, should it come to that-- using the latter. Regardless, you must be doing something right if your colleagues have to force you on vacation year after year.
